Personal Branding Basics

One day in a room with Tamara Reid, for hair, beauty and aesthetics professionals who want to be known for something beyond their own chair or treatment room, and who'd like to walk out with their personal brand actually built rather than sitting in a notes app.

You don't need to become an influencer, you just need people to know what you're about

Most of the talented people I meet in this industry have never sat down and decided what they want to be known for, so they post a bit of everything, they write a bio that lists every certificate they've ever earned, and then they wonder why the education contract or the stage or the brand partnership keeps going to someone else.

It's rarely about talent. The person who gets picked is usually the one who was easiest to find and easiest to describe, and that is a skill you can learn in a day once someone walks you through it properly, in order, from the very beginning.

And there's a bigger reason this matters right now. AI is very much here, and it can already write the caption, design the flyer and answer the enquiry, but the more of that it does, the more people are drawn to the one thing it can't copy, which is a real person with a personality, a bit of humanity and a point of view. That's where your personal brand comes in, and it's why it matters more now than it ever has.

If you don't know WTF a personal brand is, why you need one, or how it gets you booked and busy (whether that's in your own business or working with the brands you'd love to partner with), then this is the day you need to make space for in your booking software.

On the day we go right back to basics on what a personal brand is (and what it isn't), and then we build yours, together, before you leave the room.

By five o'clock, your personal brand will be built and written down

  • Your signature skill (the cleanse, the selling method, the technique) shaped into a career pathway that fits the expertise you already have, and the part of the industry you want to own with it
  • A clear decision on how your personal brand and the business you own or work in should sit together, whether that's side by side, fully joined or deliberately kept apart
  • Exactly who you're talking to, whether that's salon owners, therapists, educators, students or brands, and what each of them needs, wants and worries about
  • Your tone of voice, written down, with the words you'd use and the ones you never would
  • The basics of your visual identity (colours, fonts and the way your photos should look) chosen, so everything you post looks like it came from the same person
  • A rewritten bio for Instagram, LinkedIn and an education or speaker profile
  • Your content pillars and a month of post ideas, so Tuesday morning doesn't start with a blank screen

Where we start

The thing you already do brilliantly is where your brand starts

  1. 01

Find the thing you鈥檙e known for

Most of you already have something you're known for inside your own salon or clinic, even if you've never called it that. It might be the signature cleanse your clients rebook for, the way you prescribe homecare so it actually sells, or the foiling technique that keeps your blondes bright between appointments, and right now it lives inside your column, earning you one client at a time.

  2. 02

    Shape it into a pathway

In the morning I'll help you take that one thing and mould it into a career pathway that makes sense for the expertise you already have. We'll work out whether it wants to become education, a masterclass, a brand partnership, a speaking topic or a product of your own, and which part of the industry you want to own with it, whether that's skin therapists, colourists, salon and clinic owners, or the brands that supply them.

  3. 03

    Choose who you鈥檙e building for

Then we get specific about who you're talking to, because a signature cleanse sells very differently to a therapist who wants to learn it, a clinic owner who wants it on their menu and a brand looking for an educator who can teach it. You'll leave knowing which of those people you're building for first, and exactly what each of them needs to hear from you.

  4. 04

Decide where you end and the business begins

We'll also tackle the question that trips up almost everyone in this industry, which is where your personal brand ends and the business begins, and whether the two should be separated or joined. If you own the salon or clinic, we'll work out when your name should sit front and centre, when the business needs to stand on its own so it isn't relying on you being in the room, and how each can lift the other. If you're employed, we'll talk about how to build a name for yourself that your employer sees as an asset rather than a threat, and what you should keep in your own hands if you ever move on.

Bring your laptop and your phone. Everything else (my frameworks, the food and the coffee) is on me.

This is for you if you're starting from the beginning, or starting again

This is for you

It's for hairdressers, skin and beauty therapists, injectors, educators, salon and clinic owners and brand people who know they should be more visible but have never had anyone sit down and show them how a personal brand is put together. It's also for you if you've tried before, posted for a few weeks, felt a bit silly and stopped, because the problem was almost certainly the foundations rather than you.

This isn't for you (yet)

It isn't for you if your brand is already clear and you're ready to sharpen it, price it and take it somewhere commercial, because that's what the Personal Branding Intensive is for. If you're not sure which one fits, send me a message and I'll tell you honestly.

Why I’m the one teaching this

I've done this work myself, from therapist to paid global keynote speaker, all by hand and without help, and wow, have I learnt some lessons along the way. I got there by building a personal brand that is known, liked and trusted, which in turn gets me paid by the household brands our industry loves. I also run Inside Industry, a consultancy where I'm having conversations with brands who are desperate for new talent to feature as their ambassadors, take the stage at their events or license their education to.

I've watched too many brilliant people in this industry stay small because nobody ever explained how visibility actually works, and this day is my way of fixing that for thirty of you at a time.

Stay for the second day, and learn how to say it on a stage

Once you know what you want to be known for, the fastest way to be known for it is to stand up in front of a room and say it, which is exactly what we do the next day. Speaking & Presenting Basics runs on Tuesday 16 February in the same room, and it covers stage presence, building your first talk, what to wear, how to handle a microphone without it handling you, and how to land your first speaking gig.

Questions

Do I need a big following to come?

Not at all, because most people in the room will have a few hundred followers, or none they're proud of, and that's exactly who this day is built for.

I'm not on social media much. Is this still useful?

Yes, because a personal brand is what people say about you when you're not there, and social media is only one place that shows up. Your bio, your education profile, how you introduce yourself at an event and how a brand describes you to their team all come from the same foundations.

I'm employed, not a business owner. Is this still for me?

Absolutely, and it's one of the most important things we'll cover. We'll talk about how to build your own name in a way that sits comfortably alongside the business you work in, so it helps your employer as much as it helps you, and what's worth keeping in your own hands for the long term.

How is this different from the Personal Branding Intensive?

Personal Branding Basics is the beginning, where we build your brand from the ground up with a bigger group. The Intensive is a smaller room for people whose brand already exists and who want to sharpen it, price it and take it somewhere commercial. A lot of people will do Basics first and come back for the Intensive later, which is the right order.

I've watched your free Beginner's Guide masterclass. Is this the same thing?

No, and it's the natural next step. The free masterclass is 45 minutes on why a personal brand matters and what it's made of, so you can see whether it's for you. Personal Branding Basics is a full day in the room where we actually build yours, with my frameworks, my feedback and the time to finish it before you leave.

Can my business pay?

Of course, and you'll get a tax invoice in your business name, and the $497 includes GST, so if your business is registered for GST you can claim it back.

What if I can't make it after I've booked?

You can transfer your seat to someone else in your business at any time up to 48 hours before.

Will there be food I can eat?

The hotel caters for most dietary requirements, so tell us at checkout and they'll look after you.
